Indian Women Cricketer's Coach Attempts Suicide

The news of Indian women all-rounder Sneh Rana’s coach, Narendra Shah, attempting suicide has shocked the cricket fraternity. The reason for his suicide attempt was the audio recording of a lewd conversation between him and a female cricketer, who was receiving training at his cricket academy, which went viral on social media platforms.

Narendra Shah was a former member of the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand and held the position of co-convener of women’s cricket. However, after the explicit audio recording was made public, he was dismissed from his role on Saturday. Shah has retained his position as secretary of the Chamoli District Cricket Association.

The victim, a minor from the Chamoli district, is currently undergoing 10th-grade schooling and cricket training in Dehradun. Shah has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code, and the SC/ST Act for using abusive and obscene language regarding the victim’s caste.

The authorities are investigating the case as multiple other girls have reported similar complaints against Shah. The Cricket Association of Uttarakhand spokesperson Vijay Pratap Malla spoke about the CAU’s stand on Sneh Rana’s coach Narendra Shah.

“Taking cognizance of the media reports about the viral audio clip, the apex body of the state’s cricket association on Saturday convened a virtual meeting and decided to remove Narendra Shah from the post of co-convener of the women’s cricket,” said Pratap Malla.

The victim or her family has not yet filed a complaint against Shah. If they do, further action will be taken against him after an inquiry.
