Nigeria was the last African team to top a World Cup group in 1998 in France.
Morocco became the first African team for 24 years to top their World Cup group, beating the previous edition’s runners-up Croatia and second-placed Belgium.
Two first-half goals got the Atlas Lions going but they had to settle for a late goal in a 2-1 win over Canada at the Al Thumama Stadium on Thursday, leaving them struggling for the second half.
Morocco secured seven points, two more than runners-up Croatia, to advance beyond the group stage for the second time, becoming the first African country to do so in 36 years at the 1986 Mexico World Cup. En-Nesyri was dangerous in the first half, doubling Morocco’s lead in the 23rd minute when he ran onto Achraf Hakimi’s long ball and beat Borjan at the near post.
En-Nesyri also volleyed into Canada’s net during stoppage time in the first half, but the goal was ruled offside.
Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd put Canada on the scoreboard with his own goal in the 40th minute, when Sam Adekugbe’s cross was deflected by his own goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
