Two record goalscorers, two contrasting results as France’s Olivier Giroud scored the winner and England’s Harry Kane missed a penalty. Champion France continued their quest for back-to-back titles with a 2-1 win over England at the Albeit Stadium on Sunday to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The defending champions will first face Morocco, who knocked Portugal out of the tournament on Saturday, for a place in Thursday’s final.

England vs France Highlights

France’s all-time record goalscorer Giroud scored the winner 12 minutes from time, while Kane leveled the scoreline at 1–1 with a spot-kick in the 54th minute. England dominated the second half and France took a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to a superb goal from Aurelien Tchouameni in the 17th minute.

Kane, who equaled Wayne Rooney’s all-time England record of 53 goals with his first strike, had another chance to score a second equaliser, but an 84th-minute penalty saw the ball go over the French crossbar. After this lapse, England failed to take the game into extra time.

France are now one win away from becoming the first back-to-back finalists since Brazil in 2002 and only the third team to retain the trophy after Brazil in 1962 and Italy in 1938.

France were hard pressed to win, although the first tournament knockout match between two of the sport’s oldest rivals kept the excitement alive on this extraordinary quarter-final weekend.

France went ahead at the break after 17 minutes as England still appealed for a foul on Bukayo Saka.

Antoine Griezmann rolled the ball attractively into the path of Tchouameni, whose low shot from 25 yards curled inside the post and past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

England eventually continued to push, push and probe, albeit without much accuracy, although France’s keeper Hugo Lloris was quick off his line to make a save at Kane’s feet, then stalled another drive from the England captain.

Lloris was again in action early in the second half, when England were on target when Jude Bellingham fired a superb shot over the bar.

Saka, who looked at his most dangerous in the first half, was tripped by Tchouameni and Kane equalized the England record for 53 with his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Lloris scoring from the penalty spot, while Wayne Rooney finished as top scorer.

England were happy with the goal and playing with confidence, but although centre-back Harry Maguire brushed the post with a header, they could not make their dominance count. Instead France counter-attacked as Griezmann swung in a cross, which Giroud brilliantly volleyed past Maguire for his fourth goal of the tournament.

England were given another lifeline via VAR when Theo Hernandez leveled for Mason Mount but Kane sent his spot-kick over the bar six minutes from time.

England pushed for an equalizer but suffered their seventh defeat in 10 World Cup quarter-finals.
