France will next face England in the last 8 stage
Les Bleus had to dig deep but scored on the stroke of half-time as Giroud became France’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals before Mbappe’s 74th-minute stoppage-time screamer sealed Poland’s fate.
Poland, seeking to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 1986 and the quarter-finals for the first time since 1982, had great chances in the first half but Robert Lewandowski was cleared off the line by the French midfield. Less outstanding with last-second penalties.
Keeper Hugo Lloris made his 142nd appearance and is now tied with Lilian Thuram as France’s most capped player, and his experience will be vital as he tries to rule out Piotr Zielinski.
Coach Didier Deschamps warned that Poland had more to offer than Lewandowski and he was proved right at the Al Thumama Stadium.
