Ecuador scored an early second-half goal against the Netherlands in their Group A match at the Khalifa International Stadium. Cody Gakpo’s first half was canceled out by a tap-in from Ecuador captain Ener Valencia. Ecuador’s comeback was almost complete in the 59th minute when Michael Estrada’s shot deflected off the crossbar.

The result was that the hosts Qatar were eliminated from the tournament with one game remaining. Qatar had earlier suffered a second straight defeat in the tournament, losing 3–1 to Senegal, meaning they needed Ecuador to beat the Dutch to stay in contention.

Iran beat 10-man Wales with two goals in injury time in their Group B match. Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off outside the penalty box for a foul.

Iran scored twice in injury time to beat Wales 2-0, their biggest-ever one-man advantage to stay alive in Group B. Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent-off late in the second half for a foul outside the penalty box, giving Iran a man-first lead in the dying minutes.

The first half was dramatic, with neither team able to create any big chances. Earlier, Gareth Bale made history for Wales by making his 110th appearance for the country, starting the game against Iran.
