Midfielder Bruno Fernandes scored two goals as Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 in their second FIFA World Cup 2022 Group H match on Tuesday. The win secured Portugal’s place in the round of 16 with a game in hand, becoming only the third team after France and Brazil to qualify for the knockout stages.
Portugal now have six points from two matches, which is enough to seal a place in the next round in Qatar. While Uruguay will now need a win against Ghana, who are second with three points, in their final group match on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Fernandes put Portugal ahead in the 54th minute, with Cristiano Ronaldo claiming the opening goal. Ronaldo dived near the six-yard box to connect Fernandez’s cross but the ball went into the net without being touched. Fernandes then sealed the game with his second goal from the penalty spot, which he scored himself in stoppage time.

The match at Doha’s spectacular 89,000-capacity Lusail Stadium also featured the Qatar tournament’s first pitch attacker – a man carrying a rainbow flag and a message of support for Ukrainian and Iranian women.
Both sides made three changes from their opening matches, with Portugal bringing in veteran Pepe to replace the injured Danilo Pereira, who suffered a rib injury in training.

Portugal dominated the first half, controlling the ball and creating several chances, but not without testing Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
