A fast-paced first half at the Stadion 974 saw Switzerland take the lead through Sherdan Shaqiri but Serbia turned the game on its head with two quick goals in the space of 10 minutes through Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vilhovic.
Breel Embolo added another twist in an absorbing opening period by drawing Switzerland’s side level just before the break, while Remo Freuler restored their one-goal advantage with a goal three minutes after the restart.
Switzerland fired a warning shot with barely 30 seconds on the clock, as captain Granit Xhaka’s strike was blocked by the Serbian defense before goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saw Mobolo head-on and also on the rebound. Xhaka denied both.
After that early scare, Serbia enjoyed a spell of pressure, Nikola Milenkovic headed past Dusan Tadic’s corner before Andrija Zivkovic shot from outside the penalty area and rattled the left post with a powerful effort.
In the 20th minute, Ricardo Rodriguez’s cross was cleared and fell to Djibril Sow, who fired past Shaqiri from the right. The midfielder fired home a strike that took a slight deflection off Strahinja Pavlovic as it went into the net.
Fulham frontman Mitrovic headed in Tadic’s cross to put Serbia level six minutes later. Tadic rejoined and played the ball in for Vlahovic, who finished the Serbian comeback by curling a low shot past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
But Embolo headed home Silvan Widmer’s low cross in the 44th minute and Freuler kept the momentum going by tapping home Syria’s fifth goal as two brilliant moves from the Swiss attack proved to be Serbia’s defeat.
Midway through the second half, Mitrovic went down too easily after a challenge from Fabian Schaer , but his appeal for a penalty was turned down, and the Serbian collapsed onto the pitch in protest of the dugout referee’s decision.
Switzerland are level with Group G winners Brazil on six points but behind because of goal difference. Serbia, who needed a win to give themselves a chance to advance, finished bottom of the group with just one point. Since the breakup of Yugoslavia, they have never progressed beyond the group stage of the World Cup.
