The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 witnessed a riveting game on March 16th as Peshawar Zalmi defeated Islamabad United by 12 runs in the first eliminator. However, amidst the thrilling match, an interesting incident occurred that caught the attention of Islamabad United fans.
During the 13th over of the game, when Peshawar Zalmi was at a score of 125-2, Islamabad United’s skipper, Shadab Khan, came in to bowl. Just before starting his over, Shadab Khan was heard declaring Babar Azam’s wicket on the stump mic saying, “Babar out hai is over mei,” and the stump mic caught it perfectly.
Interestingly, the leg-spinner went on to do exactly what he had promised. On the final delivery of the over, Shadab bowled a flat delivery around the middle stump, and Babar Azam got beaten by the pace, resulting in the ball crashing onto his front pad. The on-field umpire adjudged him out as it looked plumb, and Babar had to walk back to the pavilion.
Babar Azam had played a brilliant knock of 64 runs off just 39 deliveries, including ten boundaries, making his dismissal a crucial moment in the game. However, it was not just Babar who played an essential role in Peshawar Zalmi’s victory. Opening batter Saim Ayub gave his team the start they were looking for, and young Mohammad Haris chipped in with a quick-fire 34 off just 17 deliveries, striking at a rate of 200, which helped them post a massive total of 183-8g.
In response to the total posted by Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United had a good start, courtesy of English opening batter Alex Hales, who scored 57 runs off just 37 deliveries, including seven fours and two sixes. Sohaib Maqsood also joined the party and went on to score 60 runs off just 48 deliveries.
Skipper Shadab Khan played a crucial knock of 26 runs off 12 deliveries, but his efforts were not enough to make his team go beyond the total posted by Peshawar Zalmi. Aamer Jamal and Salman Irshad grabbed a couple of wickets each, which helped their side defeat Islamabad United by 12 runs in the first eliminator of PSL 2023.
Shadab Khan’s Expletive Caught on Stump Mic Goes Viral
Islamabad United captain, Shadab Khan, recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons during a game against Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. The game, which was held at Pindi Club Ground in Rawalpindi on March 7, saw Shadab Khan lose his cool and utter some expletives into the stump mic after being clean bowled by Ihsanullah.
The match was a nail-biting thriller, and Shadab Khan’s dismissal at a crucial moment after scoring 44 runs only added to the excitement. During the 15th over of Islamabad United’s innings, Ihsanullah bowled a quick delivery to Shadab Khan, which he failed to respond to. The ball hit his stumps, and Shadab Khan couldn’t hold back his emotions, uttering an expletive in the heat of the moment.
The incident was caught on the stump mic and quickly went viral on social media, with netizens sharing their reactions. Some even compared Shadab Khan to Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who is known for his aggressive on-field behavior.
Despite the controversy, Islamabad United went on to win the game, thanks to a half-century by all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who scored 50 runs in just 26 deliveries.
Multan Sultans had earlier posted a mammoth total of 205-5, with Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan scoring 75 and 60 runs, respectively. In response, Islamabad United chased down the target on the second-last delivery of the 20th over, winning their sixth game in the PSL 2023.
Shadab Khan’s outburst may have been a moment of weakness, but it also highlights the intense pressure and emotions that come with playing at the highest level of cricket. As a captain, he will need to work on keeping his composure in the future, both for his own sake and that of his team.
