Robert Lewandowski breaks World Cup duck for Poland
Robert Lewandowski scored his first World Cup goal to give Poland a vital victory 2.0 over a spirited Saudi Arabia.
Poland were second best for most of the first half – three of their players were booked in the first 20 minutes – but Piotr Zielinski put his side up against the run of play in the 39th minute.
Saudi Arabia, who played with intensity and caused problems on the pitch from the outset, almost immediately had a chance to strike back when Krystian Bielik conceded a penalty.
Salem Al Dawsari stepped in from 12 yards out, but his effort was saved by Polish keeper Wojciech Szczęsny, and he followed it up with another crucial stop, heading in Al Burayk’s rebound.
The second half followed the same pattern, but the game was still in the balance with 10 minutes left. In the 83rd minute, Lewandowski got a defensive error by Abdullah Al-Maliki and scored his first World Cup goal to secure three vital points for Poland.
Poland top in Group C with four points after two matches, having previously drawn with Mexico, and Saudi Arabia have taken three points from their opening game against Argentina. Argentina will take on Mexico in a kick-off at 7 pm on Saturday.
