This rule will help negate the disadvantage caused to teams due to the outcome of the toss and dew factor.

The Impact Player Rule is a modified version of the "Super Sub Rule" which was implemented in ODIs around 2005.

Teams will be able to pick a substitute player out of five names mentioned by the captain at the toss, and the Impact Player can perform multiple roles.

However, a maximum of 11 players can bat and bowl in a match, even if there is a possibility of 12 players representing a team.

Teams can only choose an Indian cricketer as their Impact Player, and the only way to field an overseas player is if a team names only three overseas players in its starting XI.

Other new rules in IPL 2023 include allowing captains to finalize their Playing XIs after the toss and punishing slow over rates by making teams field with one less player outside the 30-yard circle.

The last new rule is related to unfair movements by fielders, which will result in the batting team receiving five runs and a dead ball.
